Product Sustainability

The design and engineering choices we make in product development can have profound effects on reducing our overall environmental impact. Products designed with sustainability in mind can transform markets. From reduced fuel consumption and emissions to an improved global cold chain and energy efficiency, UTC products are helping to address some of the world’s biggest challenges. Here are some examples of the sustainability attributes of our products:

Pratt & Whitney’s Geared Turbofan™ jet engines reduce fuel use by 16 percent, nitrogen oxide emissions by 50 percent to the regulatory standard and noise footprint by 75 percent.

Otis's Gen2® elevator uses as much as 75 percent less energy than a traditional elevator when coupled with a regenerative drive.

Carrier's NaturaLINE® units are the world’s first natural refrigerant technology for container refrigeration. By using carbon dioxide (CO2), the NaturaLINE design improves upon the PrimeLINE® unit’s ability to reduce carbon emissions by 28 percent compared to previous units using synthetic refrigerant.

UTC Aerospace Systems’ Next-Gen Integrated Propulsion System incorporates the latest in composite technology with a 360-degree acoustically smooth inlet and an advanced thrust reverser that lowers drag and reduces fuel burn by 1 percent.

Our product sustainability 2020 goals and progress to date

We have set the following goals for enhancing the sustainability of our products by 2020:

  • Implementing Design for Sustainability during the development cycle of new products
    • Desired impact: Process consistency and resource impact reduction
  • Incorporation of Life Cycle Analysis principles during the development cycle of significant new products
    • Desired impact: Ensuring identification of key Design for Sustainability product attributes

In designing for sustainability, we consider and strive to optimize these attributes:

Materials of concern
and Chemical substances
Air and GHG
Product end-of-life

To help advance our work in product sustainability, UTC is proud to be a participant in the Product Sustainability Roundtable (PSRT). The PSRT brings together experts from the world’s most respected organizations to work toward addressing the environmental and social impact of their products.
